Brasil with Michael Palin

Michael Palin has travelled across most of the globe over the years, but never to Brazil. In this four-part series for the BBC he crosses the country as big as a continent to find out what makes it tick. The first of four episodes covers Brazil’s Nordeste including São Luís and the Lencois Maranhenses

The Guardian has a comprehensive feature on Palin’s Brazil series: “Michael Palin’s Brazil, 19th Oct 2012”.
It remarks: “In the far north-east, the Lençóis Maranhenses national park is most easily accessed from Barreirinhas. Buses run there from São Luís in about four hours. An air taxi takes 50 minutes. Stay in Barreirinhas and take day trips by boat or jeep, or try a pousada in the village of Atins, reached by 4×4 trucks or boat. The best time to visit is June-September, after the rainy season has filled the lakes.”

Curious to see whether there’ll be a “Palin effect” – areas of the world that he has visited suddenly become popular tourist attractions – setting in?
